Bert Poulin, Staff Representative
Bert crisscrosses Ontario on behalf of COPE. You could find him in Kapuskasing, Ottawa, Toronto and many points in between working on behalf of COPE members; in English and in French.
In his role as a staff representative, Bert negotiates collective agreements, deals with grievances and arbitrations and provides members with the resources and services they need in the workplace. He is also involved in conciliation, mediation and pay equity for the COPE Ontario membership across the province and Canada.
Bert has been a Union activist for over 35 years. In 1980, Bert worked for E.B. Eddy Forest Products Ltd. and was elected to his first local union position, as a steward. He then became a Staff Representative/Organizer in 1996 with the Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers (IWA) Local 2693 which later merged with the Steelworkers (USW) in 2005.
While employed with USW Local 2693, Bert held various positions, such as: Grievance Committee Member, Steward, Financial Secretary, Health and Safety Director, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President and acting President of the Local. During this time, Bert successfully organized the Centre de Sante Communautaire de Sudbury, the Canadian Blood Service of Sudbury, Gogama Forest Products Ltd., I. Roy Lumber Ltd. and Goulard Lumber Ltd.
In 2008, Bert was hired by COPE Ontario as a bilingual Staff Representative. He has been involved with Provincial Bargaining for the Education Sector; merged different Collective Agreements in the Health and Safety Sector due to government restructuring; assisted with COPE Ontario’s organizing drives and successfully merged the Saugeen employees into the Northern Credit Union agreement.
Born in St. Georges de Beauce, Québec, Bert moved to Espanola where he currently lives with his wife Paulette. They have three children (including son Jessy, who lives in Toronto) and three granddaughters.
